Liora Biblical History: The Podcast

The Bible's most famous stories aren't what you think.

Dr. Liora Ravid is a biblical historian who digs beneath the familiar narratives to uncover what actually happened — and why. Using archaeology, ancient law, and the original Hebrew text, Dr. Ravid reveals the real, fragile lives of Biblical heroes like Abraham, Sarah, David, and Jacob.

Short, surprising, and deeply researched, each episode reframes a story you thought you knew.

Based on "The Secret Lives of Biblical Figures" by Dr. Liora Ravid.

Dr. Liora Ravid is a Biblical historian, born and raised in Israel, where she has shared the language and landscape of the Bible's characters her entire life. She earned her PhD in Biblical Studies at Bar-Ilan University, specializing in the social and legal norms of the ancient world - the marriage customs, inheritance laws, and daily realities that shaped the lives of the Bible's most famous figures. Her original Hebrew book, "The Bible Really Happened," was published in Israel in 2009 and later translated into English. Her latest book, "The Secret Lives of Biblical Figures," brings her decades of research to a wider audience. If you asked her what makes the Bible enduringly popular, she'd tell you: it's a book about ordinary people - who loved and hated, celebrated and mourned, raised families and buried children — navigating a world that, to us, is both utterly foreign and deeply, recognizably human.

In 1 Kings 2, Bathsheba secures Solomon's throne by systematically eliminating his rivals and elevating herself to the powerful role of Queen Mother.A throne won by a palace coup is never completely secure. Even after Solomon is crowned, his older brother Adonijah, the military commander Joab, and the priest Abiathar still pose a massive threat to the new king. But Adonijah makes a fatal miscalculation by asking Bathsheba to give him Abishag, David's former companion—a request that, in the ancient Near East, amounts to a direct claim on the kingdom itself.Solomon's response is swift and absolute. He sends Benaiah to strike down Adonijah, and then Joab, who falls at the very altar of God. Abiathar is stripped of the priesthood and banished. Into these newly emptied seats of power, Bathsheba's loyal coalition steps forward. Benaiah finally takes command of the army, Zadok becomes chief priest, and the men who had lived in the shadows for decades suddenly rule the court. But the ultimate victor is Bathsheba herself. Earning the title of Gevira, or Great Lady, she takes her seat at Solomon's right hand. After years of silence, a lost husband, and a lost child, she outmaneuvers the greatest military and political minds in ancient Israel to become the most powerful woman in the realm.More biblical history on Liora Biblical History.#1Kings2 #Bathsheba #Solomon #BibleHistory

In 2 Samuel 11 and 1 Kings 1, Bathsheba transforms from a woman taken by King David into a brilliant political strategist who secures the throne for her youngest son, Solomon.Decades after David took her from her husband Uriah the Hittite and brought a prophet's curse upon his house, Bathsheba remained in the palace watching the royal family tear itself apart. Her son Solomon was the youngest prince, lacking a military record and the traditional bride-price status that would guarantee his claim to the throne. When David's older son Adonijah stepped forward to claim the kingship, Bathsheba realized that survival meant moving first. She quietly assembled a coalition of ambitious outsiders—the prophet Nathan, the mercenary commander Benaiah, and the priest Zadok. These men were all second in command, knowing they would lose everything if Adonijah took power. Together, they formed a dangerous alliance that outmaneuvered the rightful heir while the old king shivered in his bed, unaware of the political masterclass unfolding in his own palace.More biblical history on Liora Biblical History.#2Samuel11 #1Kings1 #Bathsheba #KingDavid #BibleHistory

In Luke 10, Jesus tells the parable of the Good Samaritan to a religious lawyer who wants to know exactly who he is required to love—and whose suffering he is allowed to ignore. When a man is beaten and left for dead on the dangerous road to Jericho, a priest and a Levite pass him by. Despite centuries of later commentary claiming they were avoiding ritual impurity, the text shows they were walking away from the Temple, fully bound by the Jewish law that commands saving a life above all else. They simply chose not to.The original audience would have expected the third traveler to be an ordinary Israelite. Instead, Jesus names a Samaritan—a bitter historical enemy. The Samaritan doesn't just offer first aid; he uses oil and wine (elements of Temple worship) and pays the innkeeper an open-ended guarantee to protect the wounded man from debtor's prison.Jesus even weaves in a hidden callback to 2 Chronicles, reminding his listeners of a real historical event where Samaritans rescued Judean captives. The parable is not a simple greeting card message about being kind to strangers. It is a radical demand to see humanity in the very people we are taught to despise, erasing the lines of who we are allowed to exclude.More biblical history on Liora Biblical History.#GoodSamaritan #Luke10 #JesusParables #BibleHistory
